Dovre Railway to Lillehammer

Rørosbanen is a normal-gauge Norwegian railway line from Hamar via Elverum through Østerdalen to Trondheim . The route is officially called this by Bane NOR .

General

It is named after the town of Røros , which used to be of great economic importance due to its copper ore deposits . This railway line is one of the few in Norway that is not electrified. The section from Trondheim to Støren is also a section of the Dovrebane .

history

The Rørosbane was built in several sections between 1862 and 1877.

Starting from Hamar , the construction of the first section to Elverum was decided on September 3, 1857 together with Kongsvingerbanen and Trondhjem – Størenbanen as Norway's first state railways from Storting .

The entire route was officially opened on October 13, 1877. This makes it the oldest "parent railway" in Norway, i. H. a railway line that connects two parts of the country.

Originally it was a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 1,067 mm before it was converted to standard gauge between 1917 and 1941.

On January 4, 2000, two trains collided on this route near Åsta. 19 people died in this accident.

Route change to Røros

Until December 11, 1944, the city of Røros was only connected to the main line with a branch line with a terminus station, which branched off in Statene ( German  end of town ). Trains from Storlien / Trondheim coming from the north could enter Røros station directly. For trains coming from Elverum in the south, this was only possible by changing direction in Statene. With the construction of the 3.6 km long route, Røros became a through station. At the same time, the 1.55 km long route from 395.5 km to Statene was closed.

geography

The route runs through Østerdalen and reaches the highest point at Harborg (between Glåmos and Rugldalen) at 670  meters over havet (moh.) (The official name for the height above sea level in Norway). The route has an average gradient of 15  (Løten – Elverum), the highest value is reached with 36 ‰ at km 386.296 near Os.

Future prospects

A 2015 study by Jernbaneverket on the non-electrified routes in Norway concluded that the route is very important for diversion traffic in the event of problems on the Dovrebane and should possibly be electrified. Other forms of propulsion such as gas, biodiesel or hydrogen are also to be investigated. With four leased standby locomotives, 50 to 75 percent of the diversion traffic could be handled.

Individual evidence

  1. In Norwegian , the ending "-en" for nouns is a definite article . Therefore, the correct designation in German texts is either “Rørosbanen” or “die Rørosbane”.
