The railway line Tønsberg - Eidsfoss ( Norwegian "Tønsberg - Eidsfossbanen" (TEB) ) was a narrow-gauge railway line in Norway . The branch line of the Vestfoldbane , which led from Tønsberg to Eidsfoss in Vestfold og Telemark , was opened on October 18, 1901 and was in operation until June 1, 1938. Part of the line was operated jointly with the Holmestrand – Vittingfoss railway line.
An important customer was the Eidsfos Jernverk ironworks in Eidsfoss, which produces cast iron ovens. The construction of the line was a response to the strong economic development that arose from the Vestfoldbane along the coast.
Tønsberg – Eidsfossbanen
The planning of the route began before the turn of the century. The cost of the route was estimated at 1.2 million crowns . In 1896 the government promised a grant of 596,000 crowns. The rest was funded with public and private contributions.
On May 26, 1900, the Storting decided to grant a loan of 125,000 crowns for the railway line.
The route was 48 km long, the maximum difference in altitude was 38 meters. In the early years, wood, fertilizer, milk and grain had to be transported. In 1907 a deficit of more than 17,000 crowns was made on the route. This year three steam locomotives were in use on the route. For the mutual rental of wagons between Norges Statsbaner and Tønsberg – Eidsfossbane , 40 Öre per day was due for a two-axle freight wagon, plus one Öre per running kilometer. Separate agreements applied to passenger cars. The company received a user fee for using the six-kilometer stretch between Hillestad and Hoff through the Holmestrand – Vittingfossbane .
Vestfold private banker
In 1934 the two companies Holmestrand-Vittingfossbanen and Tønsberg-Eidsfossbanen merged to form A / S Vestfold Privatbaner . Passenger traffic on the HVB ceased on September 27, 1931. Freight traffic was temporarily suspended from 1935 due to the closure of Vittingfos Brug , as no goods were to be transported.
The line was taken over by the state in 1938 and closed on June 1, 1938. All rails have been removed.
Remnants of the railway line
The engine shed , the jetty with rails in Eidsfoss and the waterway in Fresti are still there. Revetal station is now a café and Fossan's was converted into a residential building. All other intermediate stations have been demolished, only a few remains of the former railway bridges can be found. The Østbybekken bru, a stone viaduct near Kopstad, was declared a cultural heritage in 1997.
Museumsforeningen Vestfold Privatbaner
To the south of the Hillestad school in Hynnås on the Holmestrand – Vittingfoss railway line , the association Museumsforeningen Vestfold Privatbaner has rebuilt 150 meters of track. A copy of the Ramnes station building was rebuilt there, and the construction of a small locomotive shed began in 2013.
«Eidsfosbanevise»
A piece of music was written about the route: the "Eidsfos Railway Way" . The composer and lyricist are unknown. There is a shellac record recorded by Johannes Dehn with a speed of 78 min −1 ( Gramophone 72727 ).
