The Jærbane is a railway line between Stavanger and Egersund in Norway . It forms part of the Sørlandsbane and leads over the flat coastal landscape of the Jæren .
history
The line was opened in 1878 as a narrow-gauge railway (1067 mm), converted to standard gauge (1435 mm) in 1944 and electrified in 1956. Due to the high volume of traffic, the line between Stavanger and Sandnes was double-tracked between 2006 and 2009. This construction work was completed on November 16, 2009 and with the timetable change in December, a 15-minute cycle was introduced between Stavanger and Sandnes. A freight yard is also being built between Ganddal and Øksnevadporten.
The Jærbane had a branch line ( Ålgårdbanen ) with a length of twelve kilometers, which leads from Ganddal to Ålgård . Passenger traffic was operated on this route until 1955, in 1988 this route was closed for freight traffic and can now be used in some parts of the summer with draisines . The train station in Figgjo is now a museum.
Traffic takeover by Go-Ahead
After Go-Ahead took over the traffic on the route in December 2019 with the start of Trafikkpakke Sør (Sørlandsbanen, Jærbanen and Arendalsbanen), Bane NOR Eiendom , which has 13 workshops in Norway, built a new workshop for multiple units in Stavanger.
The workshop in Kvaleberg , two kilometers outside of downtown Stavanger, was built in this context . So far, NSB trains have been serviced by the subsidiary Mantena . Vy has decided that the maintenance of over 100 Flirt trains ( NSB Type 74 – Type 76 ) will be taken over by the manufacturer Stadler on its own responsibility. In Kvaleberg, Go-Ahead rented the workshops and put the maintenance out to tender. Go-Ahead chose Mantena, which has more than doubled its workforce in Stavanger.
