Jernbanedirektoratet ( German  roughly "Railway Directorate " ) is a Norwegian state administrative organization ( Norwegian "Directorate" ) responsible for the operation of the railways in Norway .

The establishment of the company was decided at the meeting of the king with the Statsråd ( Norwegian “Kongen i statsråd” ) on February 5, 2016 and began its operational tasks on January 1, 2017. The establishment was part of the railway reform of the Erna Solberg government .

Jernbanedirektoratet is subordinate to the Ministry of Transport ( Norwegian "Samferdselsdepartementet" ) and started its work on January 1st, 2017. It is responsible for the strategic development of train traffic, the investigation of future transport needs, the coordination of rail traffic with other modes of transport and for the tendering of passenger train traffic.

Trafikkpakke Sør

The “Trafikkpakke Sør” ( Southern Transport Package ) includes long-distance trains on the Sørlandsbane from Oslo S via Kristiansand to Stavanger , local trains on the Jærbane Stavanger - Sandnes - Egersund and regional trains on the Arendalsbane . The contract was signed with Go-Ahead AS. During the ten-year term, Go-Ahead will receive compensation payments totaling NOK 1.5 billion, while the previous operator received NOK 486 million for 2018 alone. The takeover will take place on December 15, 2019.

Trafikkpakke Vest

The "Trafikkpakke Vest" ( Transportation Package West ) includes the long-distance Oslo S Bergen ( Bergensbanen ), regional transport Bergen Voss - Myrdal and local transport Bergen-Arna ( Vossebanen ). The contract was signed with the previous operator Vy Tog AS. During the period of at least nine and up to eleven years from December 13, 2020, Vy will receive compensation payments totaling up to NOK 2.2 billion.

Trafikkpakke North

On June 17, 2019, Jernbanedirektoratet announced that the "Trafikkpakke Nord" ( North Transport Package ) with the Dovrebanen , Rørosbanen , Raumabanen , Nordlandsbanen , Meråkerbanen and the Trønderbanen line merger will be awarded to SJ Norge , a subsidiary of the Swedish SJ AB . Most recently, SJ Norge and Vy Tåg were active as bidders. Originally, three providers took part in the competition. SJ will receive a total of NOK 1.24 billion (EUR 130 million), while Vy Tog's offer included NOK 1.59 billion. For the task, SJ Norge will hire traction equipment from Norske tog AS. The start of operations by SJ Norge will take place on June 7, 2020 [obsolete] . The package contains numerous improvements with additional trains, mainly on the local transport sections.

The NSB Type 76 is intended for Trønderbanen, Meråkerbanen and Rørosbanen . These trains are bimodal and have an additional diesel car. A total of 14 trains were ordered from Stadler in December 2018. These replace all diesel railcars of the NSB Type 92 series . The first two trains are to be delivered in 2020, and they are scheduled to go into operation from April 2021.

Jernbanedirektoratet is divided into five departments:

  • Railway Strategy Development Department
  • Department for Passenger Transport Agreements
  • Infrastructure Contracts Department
  • Organization department

The authority is also responsible for the Norwegian Railway Museum and the Norwegian Railway School.

Management function

Elisabeth Enger has been appointed director of the railway management. Christoffer Serck-Hanssen became director of organizational development. In 2019 Kirsti Slotsvik was in charge.
