The Norsk Jernbanemuseum ( German  Norwegian Railway Museum ) is Norway's national railway museum . It is located in Hamar , Norway's largest inland city in the province of Innlandet .

history

The museum is one of the oldest railway museums in the world and was established in 1896. It shows a unique collection of Norwegian railway history.

The first photographs and drawings were kept on the first floor of the station building in Hamar from 1896 to 1912. After it was closed at the time, it was reopened in 1930 in an open-air museum east of the city.

Due to the expansion of the vehicle fleet and other collections, the area became too small. In 1956 the museum was moved to its present location in the Museum Park in Martodden on Mjøsa . At the end of the 1980s, the museum's premises became too small again. The Norwegian State Railways NSB bought further properties north of today's museum park. Extensive expansions began in 1995, as a result of which a new museum building with library, workshops, offices and exhibition space was opened in 2003.

On December 1, 1996, the Norwegian state railways NSB were split. It emerged Norges Statsbaner BA and Jernbaneverket , the Norwegian State Railway Administration. The name of the museum was changed back from the name NSB Jernbanemuseet , which had been used in the meantime , to Norsk Jernbanemuseum - the original name from 1896 to 1946.

On January 1, 2017, Jernbaneverket was divided again, Jernbaneverket and Bane NOR were created .

The Railway Museum was operated by Jernbaneverket until December 31, 2016, and has been under the Jernbaneverket since January 1, 2017.

The exhibition

The permanent main exhibition shows the state of development of the Norwegian Railways around 1800 and 1900. The exhibition is structured like a city train station with two platforms and original vehicles. The main building includes a model railway exhibition showing numerous Norwegian railway lines, a children's playground, a library with literature on the railway system and a rich collection of pictures from 1860 to the present day. The collection documents the construction and operation of the railway in Norway.

Historical rails, station buildings, historical locomotives and wagons are exhibited in the museum park. Norway's oldest train station building is on the museum grounds; Kløften stasjon . The locomotive and wagon halls contain a historical collection from the earliest Norwegian railway history. Norway's largest steam locomotive, the "Dovregubben" ( NSB Type 49c 470 ) , the king carriage and other historical material are on display there. The narrow-gauge Tertitt-toget drives in the summer months . His locomotive, the "Urskog" ( Richard Hartmann , 1895), and his wagons come from the Urskog-Hølandsbane . The railway has been active on the museum grounds since 1962. In addition, the Knertitten garden railway runs within the exhibition grounds.
