Egersund is a town in the municipality of Eigersund in the Fylke (Province) Rogaland , Norway , at the Dalane -Küste. The city is the administrative center of Eigersund and has 11,433 inhabitants (as of November 2019).

location

To the west of Egersund, separated from the mainland by an approximately 13 km long, mostly only 200–300 m wide sound , and connected to Egersund in the north by the Eigerøy bru, which crosses Nysund, which is only about 50 m wide , is 19.9 km² Eigerøya island . On its east bank are several large fish processing plants as well as an Aker Solutions plant that makes parts for oil rigs .

history

The development of the area began at the beginning of the 16th century. Egersund became a customs post in 1798 and in 1837 the town was given the title of town council. In 1843 the city was badly damaged in a fire. The reconstruction was carried out according to the then ideal city map with a chessboard floor plan. In 1878 the city was connected to Stavanger by the Jærbanen .

On April 9, 1940, Egersund was occupied by the Wehrmacht during the German invasion of Norway . The city was of strategic importance not only because of its port, but also because it was from there that the telegraph connection to Great Britain began.

In 1965, the municipality of Egersund was merged with the municipality of Eigersund and Helleland , making Egersund now part of the municipality of Eigersund.

economy

Fishing, trade and shipping are traditionally important industries for the city. Herring was mainly caught until the 1960s , but now that the herring stock has declined, other fish species are caught. The port of Egersund was the third largest fishing port in Norway in terms of catches in 2015. The total quay length of the port is 4500 meters, it is ice-free all year round and can be used regardless of the tides .

From 1847 to 1979 there was a porcelain factory in the city, which had a leading position in the production of porcelain.

From 1993 to 2008 there was a ferry connection to Hanstholm in Denmark , which continued from Egersund to Bergen .
