Eigersund is a municipality in the Norwegian Fylke Rogaland . The municipality is located around the city of Egersund , which is the administrative center. Eigersund borders in the west on the municipality of , in the north on the municipalities Bjerkreim , Sirdal (Fylke Agder ) and Lund and in the east on the municipality Sokndal . The municipality is in Dalane .

The name Eigersund comes from the old north. Eikundarsund , the sound between the oaks.

The local newspaper Dalane Tidende for Eigersund and the municipalities Bjerkreim, Lund og Sokndal is published in Egersund. It replaces the former newspaper Egersundsposten , which was Rogaland's oldest newspaper and whose production was discontinued in 1940.

economy

Fishing and agriculture are important. In terms of the amount landed, Eigersund is Norway's largest fishing port. In agriculture, sheep breeding, milk production and the cultivation of fruits and berries are most represented.

The Trollpikken rock formation , which is a tourist attraction, is located in Eigersund . In 2017 it was destroyed by visitors and finally rebuilt with the help of donations.

The Riksvei 44 goes north through Jæren to Sandnes and Stavanger and south through Sokndal and Jøssingfjord to Flekkefjord . The city of Egersund has ferry connections to Hanstholm in Denmark , as well as Haugesund and Bergen , which is operated by the Fjord Line . The Stavanger Airport in Sola is an hour's drive from Egersund.

Jærbanen , the region's first railway between Egersund and Stavanger, opened on February 27, 1878.
