history

The transport company Rutelaget Askøy-Bergen was founded in 1950. Initially, the company's job was to run the local ferry and bus service between the island of Askøy and Bergen. The company also operated a ferry connection between Stavanger and Bergen and a ferry line on the Boknafjord .

In 1992 the shipping company decided to start a ferry connection between Bergen and Egersund and Hanstholm in Denmark. In the 1980s there was already a ferry line between Bergen and Stavanger to Hirtshals in Denmark, operated by the shipping company Fred. Olsen was operated. After the merger of the two companies on January 1, 1995, operations continued under the name Fjord Line AS .

In the autumn of 1997, Fjord Line took over the ship Lygra from Seatrans AS in order to be able to use it as an additional ship for cargo . Later this ship mainly operated between Egersund and Hanstholm . The ship was sold in 2004 but was chartered by Fjord Line until 2008. In autumn 1998 Fjord Line took over the ferry connection between Bergen, Haugesund and Stavanger from the shipping company Color Line .

The 2002 financial year was a successful one for Fjord Line, which achieved a record number of passengers. The company started looking for a larger ship for the Denmark Line, as there was a great need for capacity expansion . The economic development caused a sensation - also among the competitors . They found what they were looking for at Transport of Tasmania , where the former Peter Pan had been launched as Spirit of Tasmania in Sydney since September 2002 . After being transferred to Frederikshavn as Spir , the ship was renovated and put into service as Fjord Norway on the Denmark route in April 2003 . On the simultaneously operated route from Stavanger, Haugesund and Bergen to Newcastle in Great Britain, the Jupiter was first used , then the Atlantic Traveler , which had previously operated for DFDS on the last line from Germany to Great Britain ( Cuxhaven - Harwich ).

However, since this ship was obviously not very suitable for year-round traffic across the open North Sea and had to turn around or stay in port more often in storms than other ferries, Fjord Line changed the occupancy of the lines in 2005: From now on the flagship Fjord Norway went to Great Britain and the much smaller and slower Atlantic Traveler from Bergen, Haugesund and Egersund to Hanstholm (Denmark). With this decision, the shipping company's economic difficulties began, which were exacerbated by the Color Line's decision to also operate the route from Denmark (Hirtshals) to Bergen via Stavanger with the Prinsesse Ragnhild from the 2006 season .

The Fjord Cat from Fjord Line

The shipping company used to operate three ships, which sailed two international ferry routes to and from Norway all year round. On September 6, 2006, the shipping company announced that the England route and the Fjord Norway ship would be sold to DFDS on October 16, 2006 . This meant, among other things, the layoff of more than 60% of the employees of Fjord Line (250 of 370) and an uncertainty among the remaining employees whether the regular ferry service with the remaining Atlantic Traveler can be continued.

In 2007 Fjord Line merged with the shipping company Master Ferries , Kristiansand , Norway, with Fjord Lines taking the lead. The new company is still called Fjord Line. As a result of the merger, the shipping company came into the possession of Fjord Cat , which started ferry operations on the Hirtshals - Kristiansand route and was able to shorten the travel time compared to the ships of the competitor Color Line.

The Atlantic Traveler was modernized during a shipyard stay in January 2008 and renamed Bergensfjord .

At the beginning of 2009, Fjord Line gave up the operation of Egersund and Hanstholm and now operated the Hirtshals – Stavanger – Bergen route with the Bergensfjord . As of April 2010, she again operated two ferry routes between Denmark and Norway with two ships.

In July 2013, the shipping company took the Stavangerfjord a completely new ship on the route Hirtshals-Stavanger-Bergen in operation. Together with the Bergensfjord , the new building now enabled a daily departure. In March 2014, a second ship, identical to the Stavangerfjord, was put into operation as the Bergensfjord and the previous Bergensfjord from 1993 was renamed the Oslofjord . The new buildings are 170 meters long, have 306 cabins, offer space for 1,500 passengers and 600 cars and, according to the shipping company, were the first and largest ferries in the world to run exclusively on liquefied natural gas (LNG) . The ships were built by the Bergen Group Fosen shipyard in Poland and Norway. In addition to the Hirtshals – Stavanger – Bergen route, both ships also operate the Hirtshals – Langesund connection all year round. Both ships were rebuilt in 2018 for 7.9 million euros each at Fosen Yard in Rissa , thus increasing passenger capacity.

Since June 2014, Fjord Line has been serving the Sandefjord - Strömstad route twice a day with the converted and modernized Oslofjord .

In August 2017, a new building was ordered from Austal with delivery in 2020.
