Austal is an Australian shipyard that specializes in catamaran ferries and ships in aluminum . The largest shareholder in the company is HSBC with 30.8% of the shares.

history

The company was founded in Henderson , Western Australia in 1988 . The aim was to produce high quality ships for the international market. Just five years after the company was founded, Austal was the global market leader in 40 m passenger catamarans. The great success in the Asian market and entry into automobile ferries opened up new markets for the company in Europe , the Mediterranean and the Asia-Pacific region in 1993 .

In 1998 the company was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange , and in the same year began manufacturing coast guard vessels. Also in 1998 an existing shipyard specializing in aluminum construction in Tasmania was taken over, and a shipyard in Mobile , Alabama , was established for the local US market . This also gave the company the opportunity to become an outfitter for the US Navy .

Since then, the development and construction of military ships has played an important role at Austal. In 2001, Austal became the first supplier to the US Navy for TSV ships; since 2004, the company has been involved in the development of LCS ships of the Independence class through a consortium led by General Dynamics . In 2008 Austal won the US Navy tender for JHSV ships.

In addition to the military sector, Austal continuously expanded its production of civilian ships and fast ferries, and is now one of the world market leaders for fast ferries together with Incat . The parallel development of civil and military ships ensures beneficial synergy effects . So are z. B. the fast ferries like the Benchijigua Express and the LCS-2 ships on the same basic principle.

Locations

At the main location in Henderson, Western Australia, Austal operates three individual locations with a total of nine construction halls. The fourth Australian site with a construction hall is in Margate on the island of Tasmania. For orders from the US Navy, Austal operates another shipyard with three construction halls in Mobile, Alabama.

Products

The product range includes Austal in civilian passenger and vehicle ferries , private yachts , cruise ships , offshore supply vessels , barges , and regulatory / military field patrol boats , coastal combat ships and military high-speed supply vessels .

Austal has its own names for the various types of ships, to which the length of the ship is added as a number. Ferries for combined passenger and vehicle transport are called "Vehicle Passenger", while high-speed ferries for passenger and vehicle transport are called "Auto Express".
