The Bornholmer shipping company was founded in 1866 as Dampskibsselskabet på Bornholm af 1866 (Bornholms steamship company from 1866). It was named Bornholmer Færgen in 1973 when the Danish state took over the previously private stock company . From May 1, 2005 to September 30, 2010 the transport company was officially called Aktiengesellschaft Bornholmstrafikken A / S and also included regular bus services on the island.

As of November 2007, Bornholmstrafikken, as a 50% shareholder in Nordic Ferry Services A / S (the other half belonged to the Danish Clipper Group A / S ), operated several inner-Danish ferry lines that were formerly part of Scandlines . Nordic Ferry Services A / S was renamed DanskeFærger A / S on October 1st, 2010 . At the same time the name Bornholmstrafikken was replaced by BornholmerFærgen .

The transport contract to operate the three connections to Bornholm with Danske Færgen expired at the end of August 2018. The Danish shipping company Molslinjen won the 2017 new tender . Since September 1, 2018, Molslinjen has been offering ferry services to the island of Bornholm under the new name Bornholmslinjen .
