The fast ferry Betancuria Express is a catamaran ferry operated by the Spanish ferry company Fred. Olsen Express . Until the end of August 2018, the ship sailed under the Danish flag as Leonora Christina with home port Rønne for the ferry company BornholmerFærgen between Rønne and Ystad and was Denmark's largest high-speed ferry.
history
The ferry, which was ordered on April 2, 2009, was built by Austal in 2010/2011 under construction number 246 . The keel was laid on March 3, 2010, the launch on January 28, 2011. It was completed on May 10, 2011. On May 17, 2011, the ferry officially became the property of BornholmerFærgen.
The three-week long transfer from the shipyard in Perth to Rønne began on May 18, 2011 . The ferry reached the port of Rønne on the morning of June 10, 2011.
BornholmerFærgen operated the ship from June 22, 2011 as Leonora Christina between Rønne ( Bornholm ) and Ystad ( Sweden ). The ship operated the route together with the Villum Clausen , the shipping company's second high-speed ferry. The crossing took about 80 minutes.
After the Danish shipping company Molslinjen won the transport contract for the operation of the ferry routes from Denmark, Sweden and Germany to the island of Bornholm from September 1, 2018, BornholmerFærgen sold the ship to Fred. Olsen owned Spanish shipping company Ferry Gomera , but initially chartered the ship back to fulfill the contract that ran until the end of August 2018.
On August 31, 2018, the ship last operated the route between Ystad and Rønne. In September 2018 the ship was renamed Betancuria Express and started sailing under the Spanish flag. Since October 2018, Fred. Olsen Express the ship in traffic between the Canary Islands.
Controversy over naming
The fast ferry Leonora Christina was named after Countess Leonora Christina Ulfeldt (1621–1698), the daughter of King Christian IV and Kirsten Munk . There was a debate about the naming of the ship, as the namesake Leonora Christina was considered a traitor. The magazine " Destination Bornholm " wrote that Leonora Christina had nothing more to do with Bornholm than that she was imprisoned at Hammershus for 17 months .
On February 3, 2011, the Danish Ministry of Transport confirmed that the naming should be reconsidered. BornholmerFærgen organized a competition in which the citizens should submit a name for the ship. In the following vote, the previously planned name Leonora Christina prevailed with 50.22% of the vote.
The ship was christened on June 21, 2011 by Bornholm's mayor Winni Grosbøll.
