The Alakai is a catamaran ferry . It was from Hawaii Superferry 2007 as a ferry service to the Hawaiian Islands between O'ahu and Maui used, it needed about three hours for a ride. Following a ruling by the Hawaiian Supreme Court, operations in Hawaii were banned, the company went bankrupt and abandoned the Alakai and its sister ship , which was still under construction. Since then, the owner has been the United States Maritime Administration .

Ship description

The Alakai is a 106 m long RoRo passenger and car ferry. It has a capacity of 866 passengers and 282 cars. The vehicle decks can be converted in five minutes so that there is space for 20 trucks and 90 cars.

As with the sister ship Huakai , some environmentally friendly technologies have been implemented in the ship, such as a non-toxic underwater paint , sewage disposal on land and low-emission diesel engines.

The Alakai was built from June 2004 to January 2007 at the Austal USA shipyard (a division of the Australia-based shipyard Austal ) in Mobile , as construction number 615 with a length of 106.5, a width of 23.8 and a draft of 3.65 meters. The ship is measured with 8,127 GT and has a deadweight capacity of 800 tdw . The drive system consists of the main engines (4 × MTU 20V 8000 M71) each with 8,200 kW at 1150 rpm and 4 water jet drives (KaMeWa 125 S11). With 90% engine power, the ship reaches a speed of 40 knots , the cruising speed is 35 knots.

use

The ship was christened in April 2007. The Alakai reached Honolulu on June 30, 2007 after a 17-day journey. The maiden voyage took place on August 26, 2007.

On February 13, 2008, the Alakai had to go into dry dock to repair damage to the side fin stabilizers that she had sustained in late January. The time in the dock was increased due to damage to the hull by a tug , which had become incapable of maneuvering when entering the dry dock. The Alakai resumed service in early April 2008, shortly after Aloha Airlines ceased operations.

On March 17, 2009, the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that the operating license, which was issued without environmental impact studies, was unconstitutional. Hawaii Superferry considered other uses of the ship, but also restarted operations after the end of the environmental review, but then went bankrupt and gave up the Alakai and her sister ship still under construction.

In January 2010 the US Maritime Administration announced that it would send the ships to help with the earthquake in Haiti.

On September 13, 2010, the Huakai and the Alakai were auctioned by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia for $ 25 million each. The buyer is said to be the United States Maritime Administration .
