Yuval Steinitz ( Hebrew יובל שטייניץ ; * April 10, 1958 in Ramot HaShavim , Israel ) is an Israeli politician of the Likud and since May 2015 Minister of Energy and Water Supply . Previously, he was Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2013 and Minister of Strategic Affairs from 2013 to May 2015 .

biography

After attending school, he studied philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Philosophy) and a Master of Arts (MA Philosophy) with distinction. He also obtained a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) from Tel Aviv University and received the Alon Prize for his dissertation .

Steinitz, who did his military service in the Golani Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces and is a reservist in the Alexandroni Brigade , was later Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Haifa and twice with the title "Outstanding Lecturer". In addition to his teaching activities, he also published the philosophical textbooks Invitation to Philosophy (1994) and In Defense of Metaphysics (1995).

Steinitz began his political career in July 1999 as a representative of Likud as a member of the 15th Knesset and has been a member of the 15th Knesset since then after his re-elections in February 2003 , April 2006 and February 2009 .

Between 1999 and 2003 he was not only chairman of the subcommittee on security presentations and a member of numerous other committees of the Knesset, but between 1999 and 2004 he was also chairman of the Association for the Public's Right to Know .

He was then chairman of the Knesset Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense from 2003 to 2009 and co-chairman of the Joint Defense Committee of the US Congress and the Knesset at the same time as the Republican US Senator from Arizona Jon Kyl .

In addition, between 2003 and 2006 he was temporarily chairman of the subcommittee on intelligence and intelligence services and chairman of the committee for the investigation of the secret service activities after the Iraq war and the committee of inquiry into the events in Amona on February 1, 2006.

In the 17th Knesset, he was chairman of the Subcommittee on Emergency and Local Security from 2006 to 2009 and a member of several other committees.

From April 2009 to 2013 Steinitz was Minister of Finance in Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet .

From March 2013 to May 2015, Steinitz was Minister for Strategic Affairs and Intelligence .

Steinitz wrote the book Invitation to Philosophy - Imagined Dialogues with Great Philosophers .

In the 2018 election of the chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel , Steinitz was Prime Minister Netanyahu's preferred candidate, but was not elected despite Netanyahu's significant influence.
