The University of Haifa (UH; Hebrew אוניברסיטת חיפה, Arabic جامعة حيفا) is the second major university in the northern Israeli port city of Haifa alongside the Technion .
history
The UH was founded in 1963 and today has around 13,000 students. The university is located on the southern outskirts of Haifa on the back of the Carmel Mountains and thus at one of the highest points in the city (around 470 m). The 30-story high-rise "Eschkol Tower", which was built by Oscar Niemeyer , can be seen from many points in northern Israel.
In 1971, MA programs were offered to three departments for the first time . In 1980 the first Ph.D. program followed in the psychology department. In 1991 the law faculty was opened. During the 2006 Lebanon War , the university had to cease operations. In 2007, the Haifa Center for German and European Studies (HCGES) was opened in cooperation with the DAAD .
According to the Israeli writer Yitzhak Laor , 20% of the students at Haifa University were Israeli Arabs in 2010 , but not even 1% of the teaching staff and less than 0.5% of the administrative and technical staff. Laor accused the university of racist discrimination . On the 40th anniversary of the university's founding, only the Hebrew university name was used in the redesign of its logo. Several teachers and students protested against the fact that the Arabic name of the university was no longer used there as before. The university management stated that the logo with the university name in Arabic or English could continue to be used as before, depending on the target group of recipients. On the university's website, their name is written in the logo in Hebrew, English and Arabic.
In November 2018, Haifa University and East China University of Education opened a joint campus in Shanghai . The focus should be on biomedicine , neuroscience and environmental studies.
