The Pedagogical University of East China ( Chinese  華東 師範大學  /  华东 师范大学 , Pinyin Huádōng Shīfàn Dàxué ), English East China Normal University , abbreviation ECNU , based in Shanghai is one of the most prestigious universities in the People's Republic of China . As a priority university, it is directly subordinate to the Chinese Ministry of Education and is one of the 39 universities that are to be built into world-famous universities according to the state education program "985".
