The Fudan University ( Chinese 復旦大學 / 复旦大学 , Pinyin Fudan Daxue ) is a university in Shanghai , China . It is spread over four locations in the city. Fudan is one of the most prestigious and leading universities in the People's Republic of China and also holds top positions worldwide in some subject areas. It is also a member of the C9 League , the Chinese counterpart to the American Ivy League . Its institutional predecessor was established in 1905 just before the end of the Qing Dynasty .
history
Fudan University was founded as the Fudan Public School in 1905. The two characters Fudan ( 復旦 / 复旦 ) were taken from the Confucian classics by the Jesuit father Ma Xiangbo ( 馬 相 伯 / 马 相 伯 ) (《尚書 大 傳 • 虞夏 傳》 Shàngshū Dàzhuàn Yú-Xiāzhuàn, Yú-Xiāzhuàn, 。ì 復旦y 旦àng dng - 日月光ì fù dàn xī.).
In 1917, the Fudan Public School became the Fudan Private University ( 私立 復旦大學 / 私立 复旦大学 , English Private Fudan University ) with an attached middle school. Right at the beginning of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, the university moved to the inner-Chinese city of Chongqing , where it was converted into a public university, National Fudan University ( 國立 復旦大學 / 国立复旦大学 ) in 1941 . After the end of the World War, Fudan University returned to Shanghai.
In 2019, students protested when it became known that the university administration had removed "freedom of thought" and similar terms from their statutes.
Schools and Studies
Bachelor programs are offered for 70 subjects, Master’s programs are available for 229 specializations, and the university has the right to award doctoral degrees in 29 disciplines with 154 specializations . Philosophy, economics, Chinese language and literature, journalism, mathematics, physics and chemistry are the university's top subjects. In 2000, the Shanghai Medical University, which had existed since 1927, was affiliated with it as the Shanghai Medical College . The university has an incubator for technology-oriented start- ups .
In Germany the Fudan University u. a. with the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and the Center for European Economic Research Mannheim .
In Austria , there has been close cooperation with joint study programs between the Fudan University Journalism School and the Communication Science Department at the University of Salzburg since 2004 , which implement the Media & Communication Management (MCM) program for master’s students and exchange programs for doctoral students .
