history
The story goes back to an Institute for Russian Language (上海 俄文 学校; Pinyin: Shànghǎi Éwén Xuéxiào) founded in 1949, which was affiliated with the East China People's Revolution University. The first president, Jiang Chunfang, was a renowned translator for Russian. In 1950 the institute was expanded to include a focus on the English language. In April 1950 a department for oriental languages was added, in which Burmese, Vietnamese and Indonesian were taught. After a restructuring in 1956, the institute was renamed the Shanghai Foreign Language Institute (上海 外国语 学院; Pinyin: Shàngh Wi Wàiguóyŭ Xuéyuàn) and in 1963, by decision of the State Council, it was made a priority university with departments for Russian, English, French, German, Japanese, Arabic and Spanish . In 1994 the university was renamed Shanghai International Studies University (上海 外国语 大学). In 1996, Project 211 made it one of China's hundred key universities for the 21st century.

Symbols
coat of arms
The olive branches in the coat of arms symbolize the longing for peace and friendship, the book stands for the search for knowledge and truth. The two characters 上 外 (Shàngwài) are the abbreviation of the Chinese name. The font was modeled on calligraphy from the diary of the poet Lu Xun , who is buried in neighboring Hongkou Park. The number 1949 commemorates the year the university was founded. The color is sea blue and is said to represent the spirit that embraces the world as the sea embraces the rivers.
motto
The motto consists of two sets of four characters each. The first sentence, “格 高 志远”, which means one should have the integrity and vision, comes from Confucius who said, “Those who speak honestly and act with integrity will live with vision and die with a clean reputation . "Another source is in Wenxuan (文選), an anthology of early Chinese works, edited by Liang Xiaotong of the Southern Dynasties (420-589):" With integrity and vision one seems to be invincible. "
The second sentence, “学 贯 中外”, means that one should achieve scientific excellence that brings China and the rest of the world together.
anthem
The university anthem , The Ode to SISU , was accepted by the University Senate on March 27, 1989, after being evaluated by experts including Lu Zaiyi from the Shanghai Conservatory. The lyrics were written by Zhuang Kairen, a former PhD student, and the melody was composed by Wang Zhihui, a 1985 graduate student. In 2009, for the 60th anniversary, the text was revised in line with the new motto.
