The Jiaotong University Shanghai ( Chinese  上海 交通 大學  /  上海 交通 大学 , Pinyin Shànghǎi Jiāotōng Dàxué , English Shanghai Transport University, short: SJTU ; or: 上海 交大 , Shànghǎi Jiāo Dà ) is a Chinese university founded in Shanghai in 1896 .

The name Jiaotong is the transcription of the Chinese word 交通 (pinyin: Jiāotōng; Wade-Giles: Chiaotung). This word roughly means traffic, transport or communication (something that connects) and is part of Chinese university names in several cases, in which it usually remains untranslated.

The Shanghai Jiaotong University created the so-called Shanghai ranking , a rating of universities worldwide, in addition to the Higher Education Supplement of the Times as one of the world's most cited applies.
