The Technical University of Eastern China ( Chinese  华东 理工 大学 , Pinyin Huádōng Lǐgōng Dàxué , also known in the English-speaking world as the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), colloquially known as Hua Li ( Chinese  华 理 , Pinyin Huá Lǐ )) is a university in Shanghai , China . It is a renowned university for technical subjects.

history

The university was founded in 1952 as the Institute for Chemical Technology of East China. It was the first university in the People's Republic that was specifically geared towards one discipline. The chemistry faculties of several other universities were merged and consolidated in it. In 1954, the university moved to its present campus on Meilong Street. In 1960 it was one of the first major universities in the country named by the Central Committee of the Communist Party. In 1965 she opened a branch in Sichuan Province , which later became an independent institute. During the Cultural Revolution, the University of Shanghai was subordinate to the city of Shanghai, but from 1979 it was again directly subordinate to the central government offices in Beijing. In 1993 it took on its current name. As part of the 211 project , the university has enjoyed special funding from the Ministry of Education since 1996 and has since expanded into a comprehensive university.

There are three locations: the main campus on Meilong Road in the Xuhui District of Shanghai, which mainly accommodates the Masters and PhD students. Located not far from Shanghai South Railway Station, this campus is criss-crossed by small rivers and lakes and is famous for its beauty. In addition, since 2005, the university has had a science park in Jinshan District. In 2007, the university opened its largest campus in terms of area in the suburb of Fengxian , which takes up around 600,000 square meters and mainly accommodates the younger students.
