The Shanghai University of Technology ( Chinese : 上海 理工 大学; Pinyin: Shànghǎi Lǐgōng Dàxué ) is a public university in Shanghai under city management.
history
The forerunner college on the grounds of the Shanghai Technical University was founded by American Baptists as a college and theological seminary. Its first leader was the missionary John Thomas Proctor.
Today's university was created in 1996 through the merger of the Technical University of East China and the Shanghai Institute for Machine Technology , the former Shanghai Industrial School . Until 1998 it was under the direction of the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering. In 1999 and 2003, the university was assigned further, previously independent, higher technical training institutions for optics, medicine and printing. Even today, the focus is still clearly on the technical subject areas, even if teaching is increasingly taking place in subjects such as management, natural sciences and medicine.
Teaching and studying
Around 1200 people teach at the university, including 469 professors. It provides six academy members. The university has 15 colleges, two departments, 30 research institutes, 12 research centers and three research academy institutes. Currently (2012) more than 15,600 undergraduates , approx. 3,500 master’s and 270 doctoral candidates are studying at the Technical University of Shanghai in 56 bachelor and 70 master’s programs as well as 36 doctoral and post-doctoral courses. There are ten partnerships with universities abroad, including a. with MIT and HAW Hamburg . Since 2005, the graduates of the Shanghai-Hamburg College have received an accredited German Bachelor degree in addition to the Chinese Bachelor.
