The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (short: HAW Hamburg, until 2001: Hamburg University of Applied Sciences ) is the second largest university in Hamburg and the third largest university of applied sciences in Germany . The HAW Hamburg is divided into the four faculties of Design, Media, Information (DMI), Life Sciences (LS), Technology and Computer Science (TI) and Economics and Social Affairs (W&S). In the 2018/19 winter semester, around 17,100 students take 38 Bachelor and 37 Master’s courses. They are taught by 401 professors, 492 lecturers and 399 academic staff.
history
The history of today's HAW Hamburg goes back to the year 1916, with the establishment of the double institute, the social women's school / social pedagogical institute . The training center was opened on April 20, 1917. Among other things, she wanted to make social and educational employment possible for women without children and without children. The demand for an apprenticeship position was enormous. The social women's school set up two parallel classes with around 30 students, the social pedagogical institute accepted 36 students, and in the autumn of the same year another 40 young girls and women were added. The responsibility lay in the hands of Gertrud Bäumer (scientific director) and Marie Baum (director of practical work). From 1920 Margarete Treuge took over the scientific and Hildegard von Gierke the practice-oriented school management. The latter left after only two years, while Margarete Treuge was released by the Nazis in autumn 1933. Hildegard Kipp took over the school management as a so-called unencumbered after 1945. The social women's school was later converted into a higher technical school for social pedagogy .
In autumn 1968 the ministers of the federal states decided to merge the engineering schools and higher technical schools for economics, for social education and social work, for design and for agriculture to form technical colleges. These were intended to offer students who had passed the advanced technical college entrance qualification after completing the 12th grade, a practice-oriented study on a scientific basis with the completion of the graduation.
On February 18, 1970, the Hamburg citizenship passed the law on the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences . Its task is to provide professional training on a scientific or artistic basis. The aim of the training is to apply scientific methods and knowledge in an independent professional activity. 13 different, previously independent schools have now become departments of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. The university got its current name in the course of the internationalization of the courses in August 2001.
Its former departments of architecture, civil engineering and geomatics, including the participating students , have been outsourced to the HafenCity University , founded in 2006 . The former architecture department of the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and the urban planning department of the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg can also be found there. HAW Hamburg is characterized by a wide range of topics and competencies due to its diverse history. In order to bundle these efficiently, it started to set up so-called competence centers in 2006. Cross-faculty and interdisciplinary topics are bundled in it - from "Health" to "Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency" to "Communication".
The college's own choir was founded in 2010, led by Uschi Krosch , and sang in a choir project at Carnegie Hall in 2019 .

Training of the candidates
The candidates for the upper, general administrative service at the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg have been trained at the HAW Hamburg since 2005 (degree course Public Management). As a rule, students receive their bachelor's degree after six semesters, two of which they spend in practical stations in the Hamburg administration.

International
HAW Hamburg maintains partnerships with 190 other universities and partners around the world. It is a member of the UAS7 university network , whose aim is to represent the seven leading German Universities of Applied Sciences internationally. HAW Hamburg is also a member of the European university network CARPE (Consortium on Applied Research and Professional Education) and of the international design network Cumulus. Around 2,200 foreign students (13.6 percent of all students) from over 100 nations study at the HAW Hamburg in the winter semester 2017/18.
PhDs
HAW Hamburg supports the initiation and implementation of doctorates in cooperation with universities in Germany and abroad that are eligible for doctorates. She accompanies these cooperative doctoral projects from the first interest to the completion of the doctorate and beyond. Professors at the HAW Hamburg are currently supervising over 100 doctoral projects in collaboration with colleagues at universities that are eligible for doctorates.
