The Kühne Logistics University - Scientific University for Logistics and Management (KLU) is a state-recognized, private business school based in Hamburg . The university is run by the Kühne Logistics University GmbH, whose sole shareholder is the charitable Kühne Foundation , which is based in Schindellegi , Switzerland . The non-profit foundation promotes education and training as well as research and science in the transport industry and logistics with first priority.

The KLU consists of two faculties, the Department of Operations & Technology and the Department of Leadership & Management . With currently 22 professorships, the university covers research areas in logistics, management and corporate governance. The lingua franca is English. The location of the Kühne Logistics University is the HafenCity in Hamburg. The Dean of Research at KLU is Jan Fransoo and the Dean of Studies Christian Barrot.

history

In 2003 the HSL Hamburg School of Logistics was established in the form of a public-private partnership between the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) and the Kühne Foundation based in Schindellegi, Switzerland. One year later the "MBA course - full-time" began; In 2005 the full-time MBA program was accredited by ASIIN and in 2006 an “MBA course - part-time” was started. Also in 2006 a “First Summer School - Part-Time” began.

On October 1, 2007, the name was renamed and expanded to become the Kühne School of Logistics and Management at the TUHH as the Business School of the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH). The focus in research, teaching and further training was the area of logistics and its management , such as the implementation and management of transport logistics . With the renaming to the Kühne School of Logistics and Management , the establishment of two master’s courses and a research center began. In the same year, a master's degree in “International Industrial Engineering - Full-Time” began on the TUHH campus. In 2008, the part-time MBA program was accredited by ASIIN. A master's degree in “Logistics, Infrastructure and Mobility - Full-Time” also followed in 2008. On July 31, 2009, the Kühne School received an award for its innovative training concept in logistics from the “ 365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas ” initiative. In addition, as part of the Professional Program , the Kühne School also offered part-time training courses, working groups and training courses for employees from the logistics sector. In addition to our own research activities, practice-oriented projects were supported and initiated in cooperation with companies.

In September 2010, the Kühne School of Logistics and Management was transformed into the Kühne Logistics University - Scientific University for Logistics and Management (KLU) , which received state recognition in the same year.

On September 13, 2013, the new campus and headquarters of the KLU in Hamburg's HafenCity was opened in the presence of the First Mayor Olaf Scholz . The building "Großer Grasbrook 15-17" served from 2003 to the end of 2012 as the headquarters of the software company SAP . A special feature of the building is the subsequently built-in Audimax , which is covered in gold .

Right to award doctorates

The KLU was granted the right to award doctorates on September 7, 2017. The Hamburg Senate passed a corresponding resolution at its meeting on August 8, 2017. The KLU is thus one of only 14 of a total of 118 German private universities that are allowed to award doctoral degrees independently.

Bachelor in Business Administration (BSc)

In the bachelor's program, students can choose between four profiles with different specializations:

In addition to the 'standard track' with 180 ECTS points and an integrated internship, the KLU also offers an 'intensive track' with 210 ECTS points and two integrated internships. The academic degree acquired after completing the Bachelor in Business Administration is a Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Master in Management (MSc)

Choice of one of the two specializations possible:

The academic degree acquired after completing the Masters in Management is a Master of Science (MSc).

Master in Global Logistics & SCM (MSc)

The academic degree acquired after completing the Masters in Global Logistics & SCM is a Master of Science (MSc).

Master in Global Supply Chain Management (Tricontinent)

Students of this program study the first semester at the Kühne Logistics University in Hamburg , the second in Shanghai (China) and the third semester in Knoxville , Tennessee (USA).

The fees for the 2-year master’s degree are EUR 5,980.00 per semester. The fees for the 3-year bachelor's degree are EUR 4,980.00 per semester (standard track, 180 ECTS credits) and EUR 5,680.00 per semester (intensive track, 210 ECTS credits) (as of January 2018).

Ranking

Only four years after it was founded, the KLU ranks 5th in the university ranking of the Handelsblatt in the assessed research performance per professor of all business administration faculties in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. With this result, it is on a par with long-established faculties such as Mannheim, Munich and Cologne.

In the CHE master's ranking in business administration (December 2014), the KLU achieved the grade “very good” for the five most important criteria: overall study situation, course offerings, studyability, support and international orientation, scientific and practical relevance and library and facilities of the rooms.

The 2019 ranking by Wirtschaftswoche lists the universities with the most research in the field of business administration in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Among 200 competing universities, Kühne Logistics University (KLU) ranks second among all private universities and is in the top 20 (19th place) in the overall ranking.

Measured by the number of publications per professor, the KLU Faculty ranks first among private universities and seventh in the overall ranking.

Erasmus

In July 2012, the KLU was awarded the Erasmus University Charter. This European Union program facilitates partnership agreements between European universities, students can receive EU funding for stays abroad (language courses, semesters and internships abroad) and the mobility of teachers and university staff across Europe is supported.
