Schindellegi was first mentioned in a document in 1220 as a shingle storage area. In the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period it was occupied or looted on various occasions in the course of armed conflicts, namely during the Old Zurich War (1439–1450), during the Kappel Wars (1529–1531), during the Villmerger Wars (1656/1712) and by French troops in battle at Schindellegi (1798).
In 1848 the community Feusisberg was constituted with the villages Feusisberg and Schindellegi. The connection to the Wädenswil – Einsiedeln railway line of the Wädenswil – Einsiedeln railway took place in 1877.
religion
Schindellegi is on the pilgrimage route to Einsiedeln. This is probably one of the reasons why St. Anne became the patron saint of the former chapel and today's church. Goethe, who traveled to Einsiedeln in 1797, visited and mentioned Schindellegi. Like the entire canton of Schwyz, the population in Schindellegi was originally Catholic. Due to the influx, there are now many Reformed Christians and members of other religions. The Reformed Christians belong to the Reformed parish of Höfe, whose center is in Pfäffikon SZ . The Catholic parish of St. Anna is part of the Berg pastoral care room. Reformed Christians enjoy hospitality in the Catholic Church of St. Anne at weddings and funerals .

Schindellegi is 346 meters above Lake Zurich on the Sihl , which here approaches the lake for three kilometers. A rock dam on which the St. Anna Church was built prevents them from taking the direct route into Lake Zurich . So it flows further west, along the slope, only to flow into the Limmat in Zurich . Schindellegi has been on important roads since the Middle Ages. Goethe (1797) also traveled through Schindellegi on his pilgrimage to Einsiedeln.
