Sergio Marchionne (born June 17, 1952 in Chieti ; † July 25, 2018 in Zurich ) was an Italian - Canadian manager .

Life

Sergio Marchionne emigrated to Toronto, Canada with his family at the age of 14 . There he studied philosophy at the University of Toronto , business administration at the University of Windsor and law at the Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto. Marchionne was a lawyer and accountant .

His professional career began in 1983 as an auditor and specialist in tax matters with the auditing firm Deloitte & Touche in Canada. In the following years he took on various management positions at the packaging company Lawson Mardon Group, at Glenex Industries and at Acklands Ltd. In 1992 he returned to the Lawson Mardon Group and became Chief Financial Officer .

After the company was taken over by Alusuisse Lonza (Algroup) in 1994, Marchionne held various positions and became CEO of Alusuisse in 1997 . After the merger of Alusuisse and Alcan, he was CEO and Chairman of the split-off Lonza Group Ltd. active.

When Marchionne was appointed CEO of Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) in Geneva in 2002 , he restructured the ailing company. In 2006 he took over the presidency of the SGS Board of Directors .

From 2003 Marchionne was a member of the supervisory board , since June 2004 CEO of Fiat SpA and CEO of Fiat Group Automobiles, Fiat's largest industrial subsidiary. Within the Fiat Group, he introduced numerous restructuring measures such as reducing bureaucracy, accelerating processes, and market orientation. He launched new models and saved the financially troubled company from doom. From April 2007 to April 2010, Marchionne was also a part-time Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of UBS .

From summer 2009 he was CEO of Chrysler LLC as part of Fiat's planned majority stake in the American automobile company. Fiat has now merged with Chrysler to form FCA ( Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ) based in the Netherlands. Marchionne was CEO of Ferrari , which was separated from FCA and reported directly to the Agnelli family investment company, Exor . At Exor, Marchionne was Vice President. At CNH Industrial , also controlled by Exor , Marchionne was chairman of the board.

Marchionne said in October 2014 that he did not want to lead Fiat beyond 2018. On July 21, 2018, John Elkann , President of FCA, announced Marchionne's immediate resignation from all posts for health reasons. Mike Manley succeeded him as FCA CEO, and Louis Camilleri as Ferrari CEO .

Marchionne was married; his wife and children live - since its activities in Switzerland - in French-speaking Switzerland . In 2016, he moved his official residence from Walchwil in the canton of Zug to Schindellegi in the canton of Schwyz, although he mostly lived in Turin . In 2017, the Swiss business magazine Bilanz estimated his fortune at CHF 550 million . He died on July 25, 2018 at the age of 66 in Zurich. For over a year he had been repeatedly treated for a serious illness at the University Hospital Zurich .
