Daniel "Danny" John Mills (born May 18, 1977 in Norwich ) is a former English football player .

Club career

Mills is currently on loan to Derby County in the Premier League and is under contract with Manchester City . He mainly holds the position of right full-back . Its main characteristics are the combat-oriented and agile style of play.

After he had completed the football school of his home club Norwich City in his youth , he made his debut for this club in August 1995 in the second division against Luton Town . Shortly before the end of the 1997/98 season, disputes with manager Mike Walker in March 1998 led to Mills leaving Norwich in the direction of Charlton Athletic , then also in the second division.

With the new team Mills succeeded immediately in the promotion to the top English division after Sunderland was eliminated in the play-off finals after penalties . In the following year he had to accept the direct relegation, but moved directly afterwards for 4.5 million British pounds to Leeds United and thus remained in the Premier League.

In his first season he did not succeed in asserting himself against Gary Kelly , the direct competitor in his position, and played mostly in central defense . In the following season he was only used sporadically under David O'Leary and was already thinking about a change until an injury to Kelly ensured that he played permanently in the team. He reached the semi-finals with his team in the Champions League and narrowly missed qualifying for the competition by finishing fourth in the English league with one point difference. In the next two seasons Mills established himself further in the team, but the club began to suffer from financial difficulties and loaned him to the league rivals Middlesbrough FC in the early stages of the 2003/04 season.

After the end of the season, he moved to Manchester City on a free transfer, where he immediately integrated into the team and ended the season with an overall positive team development in eighth place. On September 14, 2006 he moved to the second division Hull City for three months on loan . He then returned to City, but after signing Sven-Göran Eriksson , Mills found himself on the transfer list early in the 2007/08 season. Finally he returned again on loan to his old club Charlton Athletic and acted there until January 2008. He was then loaned to Derby County until the end of the 2007/08 season.

National team

After appearances in the U21 national team, Mills made his debut for the English national soccer team on May 25, 2001, shortly after his 24th birthday, against Mexico . Within a year he was able to play his way into the regular formation and played all five games of the English team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . In total, Mills was used in eleven international matches, with the friendly against Portugal on February 18, 2004 marked his last appearance. He was then neither appointed to the squad for the 2004 European Championship in Portugal nor to the qualifying games for the 2006 World Cup in Germany .
