As national coach, he took partin theWorld Cupfinalswith theEnglishandIvorian nationalteams.
(bornPlayer career
In 1975 a serious knee injury ended Sven-Göran Eriksson's career as a right-back at the Swedish provincial club KB Karlskoga, which was then in the country's second division.
Coaching career
Start at Degerfors IF and national and international success with IFK Göteborg (1977–1982)
Shortly after his career end due to injury, Eriksson moved to the coaching bench. Tord Grip , under whose direction he had accrued as a player-coach at KB Karlskoga, brought him as an assistant coach to the former first division club Degerfors IF , which now played in the third division. After one season, Grip left the club to look after the Swedish national team as an assistant to Georg Ericson . Without further ado, the club named Eriksson, who was a full-time teacher in Karlskoga, as his successor. As head coach, he brought together a young team and initiated a new game system that put the club back on the road to success. As a season winner, he rose to the second division with the club in 1978. With that he had also attracted attention in the Allsvenskan.
IFK Göteborg was faced with financial problems after several years without a title, which had temporarily led the club into the second division. Therefore, the club decided to hire the young coach, who was successful in lower-class football with his modern methods, for a new start. In his debut season 1979 he finished second with the team behind Halmstads BK , while he won his first title in the summer of that year with the cup victory. With the team around players like Dan Corneliusson , Torbjörn Nilsson and Håkan Sandberg , he played regularly for the Swedish championship title in the following years, but the big hit was missed.
After the runner-up in 1981 , the team overseen by Eriksson appeared again in the UEFA Cup . After victories over Valkeakosken Haka , SK Sturm Graz , Dinamo Bucharest , FC Valencia and 1. FC Kaiserslautern , he and the team reached the finals of the 1981/82 UEFA Cup against Hamburger SV . The German representative, who started the finals as a big favorite, lost 1-0 in the first leg in Sweden due to a late goal from Tord Holmgren . In the second leg, the Gothenburg club showed the tactics that had made them unbeatable in the course of the European Cup season: consistent counterattack from a safe chain of defense. The goalscorers Corneliusson, Nilsson and Stig Fredriksson led the Scandinavian club to a European Cup triumph with a 3-0 away win at Hamburg 's Volksparkstadion . A short time later, the team was also successful in the national cup. Known abroad for his success in the European Cup, he left the club in the summer for southern Europe. His successor Gunder Bengtsson continued Eriksson's work and moved into the final with the team as leaders of the regular season in the championship finals. There Hammarby IF put a small damper in the final first leg with a 2-1 away win in Gothenburg, but after a 3-1 return win IFK Göteborg had made the triple perfect.
Established as an international trainer at Benfica Lisbon (1982–1984)
Then the Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon signed the Swedes as a new coach. He almost repeated his European Cup success of the previous year when he led the team around Diamantino Miranda , Humberto Coelho , Zoran Filipović and Fernando Chalana into the final of the 1982/83 UEFA Cup with midfielder Glenn Strömberg, who had moved from the Gothenburg club to Benfica . There Benfica lost to RSC Anderlecht after a 0-1 defeat in the first leg and a 1-1 draw in the second leg. Nevertheless, the season was not without a title win, with a four point lead over FC Porto Eriksson won the Portuguese league title with the club and also the national cup thanks to a 1-0 win in the final against rivals from Porto on August 21, 1983. This was followed by a third title in August, when the club triumphed in the one-off Taça Ibérica between the Portuguese and Spanish national champions in a return leg over Athletic Bilbao , trained by Javier Clemente .
In the 1983/84 season Eriksson failed with his team in the national cup in the round of 16 at local rivals Sporting Lisbon and reached the quarter-finals in the European Cup of National Champions 1983/84 after successes over Linfield FC and Olympiacos Piraeus . There he had to give up with the team to the eventual titleholder Liverpool FC after two defeats. However, he also won a title for the third year in a row, with 24 wins in 30 games this season, he repeated winning the Portuguese national championship title.
Engagements in Italy at AS Roma and AC Florence (1984–1989)
In the summer of 1984 Eriksson joined the reigning Italian cup winners AS Roma to replace his compatriot Nils Liedholm , who had migrated to AC Milan . In his debut season he did not win the title - nine points behind champions Hellas Verona and two points behind AC Milan’s fifth place, he missed the European Cup. In addition, it was enough in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1984/85 only to the quarter-finals, with two defeats the team around Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Pruzzo failed at Bayern Munich .
In the following season, the team around Zbigniew Boniek , Falcão , Bruno Conti and Toninho Cerezo were runner-up behind Juventus Turin, 4 points behind, and won the Coppa Italia . In the following season, the club with the players to failed Giuseppe Giannini , Stefano Desideri and Emidio Oddi in the 1986-87 European Cup Winners' Cup in the first round at the Spanish side Real Zaragoza and played in the league only to the participation in the UEFA Cup. On May 4, 1987 Eriksson was sacked after a 1: 4 defeat the day before against AC Milan two game days before the end of the season and replaced by Angelo Sormani . His team was at this point in fifth place in the table and slipped to seventh place after two defeats in the last games of the season.
Eriksson stayed in Italy to inherit Eugenio Bersellini as coach of Fiorentina . He strengthened the team with players like Roberto Baggio , Ramón Díaz and Stefano Carobbi in his two years on site with Dunga and his compatriot Glenn Hysén , but the success failed to materialize. As table eight of the season 1987/88, the club was three points short of a move into the European Cup, the following year he finished seventh with the club. Benefiting from AC Milan's European Cup victory, a play-off against AS Roma with the same number of points had to decide for the qualification for the UEFA Cup. Although this was decided with a 1-0 win in favor of Fiorentina, the club separated from Eriksson.
Return to Benfica Lisbon (1989-1992)
Eriksson returned to Portugal to his former coaching station Benfica. As the successor to Toni , who led the club to the final of the European Cup in 1988 against PSV Eindhoven coached by Guus Hiddink and won the championship the following year, he was under great pressure to succeed. Once again he followed his concept of combining a southern team with a Nordic fighting spirit and added António Veloso , Silvino Louro and Álvaro Magalhães to the existing squad with Aldair and Jonas Thern . In the 1989/90 European Cup , he moved into a European Cup final for the third time in his coaching career, following successes over Derry City , Honvéd Budapest , Dnepr Dnepropetrovsk and Olympique Marseille . In the game against AC Milan coached by Arrigo Sacchi around the Dutch trio Frank Rijkaard , Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten , he missed another triumph at international level after a goal by Rijkaard in the 68th minute of the game.
With the Swedish trio Jonas Thern, Mats Magnusson and Stefan Schwarz , Eriksson and his team dominated the league in the following season. With only one defeat this season, a 2-0 away defeat at Vitória Setúbal , the club won the national championship title for the 26th time in its history with 32 wins in 38 games and was the top scorer with Rui Águas . In the following season, however, the great success failed. In the European Cup of National Champions in 1991/92 Eriksson reached the group stage with the club after victories over Ħamrun Spartans and Arsenal FC , but only managed to win against Dynamo Kiev , so that third in the group missed the final. Also in the championship, the team remained without a title, as runner-up, the club under Eriksson were ten points behind FC Porto .
Title wins in Italy with Sampdoria Genoa and Lazio Rome (1992-2001)
Eriksson was replaced by Tomislav Ivić at Benfica Lisbon and accepted an offer from Sampdoria Genoa to try his luck again in Italy. Again, he took over a difficult legacy as the successor to Vujadin Boškov , the Yugoslavian coach had led the club to its first championship, winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1990 and a further final participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1988/89 . If the club had missed the European Cup as sixth in the table last year, Eriksson was only able to lead him to seventh place in the table. With the team around Roberto Mancini , Pietro Vierchowod and Attilio Lombardo , he won his second title in Italy in 1994. Against AC Ancona , a 6-1 second leg success after a 0-0 draw in the first leg meant winning the cup. In addition, he finished third with the club in the championship behind AC Milan and Juventus Turin , the Supercup final was lost to AC Milan. Despite successful goalscorers like Enrico Chiesa and Vincenzo Montella , he was unable to keep the club in the top division in the subsequent seasons. After missing the entry into the European Cup in the following two years with two eighth places in the table, he succeeded in doing so in the 1996/97 season as sixth in the table.
In 1997 Eriksson took over Lazio Rome after he had already signed a contract with the English club Blackburn Rovers for this season , which was however dissolved before taking office because Eriksson wanted to stay in Italy for personal reasons. In his first season he was able to move into the UEFA Cup final, which he lost. The next year, however, he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Lazio 2-1 against RCD Mallorca. His greatest success came in 2000 when he led Lazio to win the Scudetto , the Italian Serie A championship . This was only the second title win for the club after 1974, after having led it to runner-up championship in the 1998/99 season. Eriksson was named Italy's Coach of the Year as the first foreigner in 2000 .
Eriksson was to be the English national coach from July 1, 2001. He took over this position on January 12, 2001, after having resigned from his coaching position at Lazio three days earlier. With seven titles in three and a half years, his time at Lazio was the most successful of his coaching career to date.
First foreign coach of the English national team (2001-2006)
Eriksson took part in two soccer world championships with England ( Japan / South Korea 2002 & Germany 2006 ). In 2002 he failed after a 3-0 win against Denmark in the second round of the 2002 World Cup in Japan / South Korea in the quarter-finals with 1: 2 against eventual world champions Brazil. In 2004 he drove with the English national team to the 2004 European Championships in Portugal . The team survived the preliminary round with a 2-1 defeat against France , a 3-0 win against Switzerland and a 4-2 win against Croatia . In the quarter-finals, however, the English national team were eliminated against Portugal on penalties . Nevertheless, he decided to continue to remain the English national coach . After the investigative reporter Mazher Mahmood was able to elicit confidential statements from Eriksson and published them, Eriksson announced on January 23, 2006 that he would leave the English national team after the 2006 World Cup in Germany. On July 1, 2006, he was in charge of the English national team for the last time. His team was eliminated on penalties in the quarter-finals against Portugal, as they did in 2004.
Short-term engagements around the globe (2007-2013)
In July 2007 he signed a three-year contract with the English first division club Manchester City . Despite a strong season for City's standards (9th place), Eriksson was dismissed after only one year with the English. Nevertheless, they qualified for the UEFA Cup via the fair play rating .
Eriksson became the coach of the Mexican national team in June 2008 . He signed a two-year contract until the 2010 World Cup. With him, his long-time assistants Tord Grip and Hans Backe also changed . On April 2, 2009, Eriksson was sacked by the Mexican Football Association after a 3-1 loss to Honduras .
In July 2009 Eriksson signed a contract with the English fourth division club Notts County until the end of June 2014. There he held the position of sports director. On February 12, 2010, however, it was announced that he had terminated his contract with Notts County after the club was taken over by a consortium of investors.
At the end of March before the 2010 World Cup , Eriksson became the new national coach for Ivory Coast . On August 3, 2010 it was announced that Eriksson is no longer the national coach of Ivory Coast , as the Ivorian Football Association and Eriksson could not agree on a contract extension. Sven-Göran Eriksson had too high salary demands, so the negotiations were broken off. Eriksson had previously collected around half a million euros in salary per year.
On October 3, 2010, Eriksson took over from Paulo Sousa as coach at the English second division club Leicester City . He was released from his responsibilities on October 24, 2011 after a disappointing start to the season.
In early September 2012 Eriksson signed a contract with the Thai first division club BEC-Tero Sasana until the end of the 2012 season. With the club he reached third place in the 2012 season.
When the second division TSV 1860 München dismissed trainer Reiner Maurer in November 2012 and presented young trainer Alexander Schmidt as his successor without consulting his investor Hassan Ismaik, Sven-Göran Eriksson sat as an observer at three games in the stands. It was suspected that the investor could use Eriksson as a trainer or sports director at TSV 1860. After several crisis meetings, TSV 1860 Munich announced on January 15, 2013 that Eriksson was to be signed as the second head coach alongside Alexander Schmidt . Eriksson himself knew nothing of an engagement. After three days, he finally canceled the club.
On January 20, 2013 Eriksson was hired by al-Nasr Sports Club as technical director, but gave up this post at the end of the season.
China (2013-2017)
On June 4, 2013 Eriksson took over the Chinese first division team Guangzhou R&F and signed a two-year contract. Under Eriksson, the team was third in the table and was able to qualify for the AFC Champions League for the first time . Nevertheless, he left the club after the season because he could not agree with those responsible on a contract extension. A week later he signed a new two-year contract with Shanghai SIPG . In his first season he was runner-up with the team and thus led the club into the AFC Champions League for the first time in its history. There he reached the quarter-finals with the team in the 2016 season and qualified for the competition again by taking third place in the league. Nevertheless, he was replaced by the Portuguese André Villas-Boas after the end of the season . After just a month, it was announced that Eriksson would look after second division club Shenzhen FC to replace Clarence Seedorf next season . He was released back in June 2017 after the team under him had won nine times in a row.
Further stay in Asia (2018–)
At the end of October 2018, the Philippine Football Federation announced that it had signed a six-month contract with Eriksson as head coach of the Philippine national team .
