Velibor "Bora" Milutinović (born September 7, 1944 in Bajina Bašta , Yugoslavia ) is a former Yugoslav football player and a current Serbian - Mexican football coach .
life and career
The Milutinović family had three sons. Miloš , Velibor and Milorad . All three made it into top teams in what was then Yugoslavia or played for Partizan Belgrade . Milutinović played as a player in Serbia , France , Switzerland ( FC Winterthur ) and Mexico . He ended his footballing career in Mexico, became the Mexican champion as a coach with the UNAM Pumas in 1981 and has lived there ever since. In addition to Serbian citizenship, he also has Mexican citizenship.
Milutinović worked as a coach for many years. He got every team (except PRC and Honduras) that he coached to at least the second round of the World Cup . In total, he has looked after these nations in over 220 games. He is called "Master of the Impossible" or "Master of the Underdogs" because he repeatedly celebrated unexpected successes with supposedly weak national teams.
He has trained five different nations for a world championship:
- Mexico (1986)
- Costa Rica (1990)
- USA (1994)
- Nigeria (1998)
- PR China (2002)
Apart from the USA and Mexico, which were automatically qualified as organizers, Milutinović qualified as coach of the teams for the tournaments. He also coached the New York / New Jersey MetroStars of the US Major League Soccer in 1999 . He was also the coach of the Honduran national team until 2004 when he was fired for reasons unknown during World Cup qualification.
In February 2007 Milutinović was the new national coach of the Jamaican national team , but after failing in the World Cup qualification, he was dismissed in November of the same year. Between April and June 2009 he was the coach of Iraq .
