Gregg Berhalter (born August 1, 1973 in Englewood , New Jersey ) is a former American football player and current coach.

Player career

Youth and college

Berhalter grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey . He attended Saint Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey , where he played on the school team with Claudio Reyna . After graduating from high school, he played college soccer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . In the period from March 1991 to June 1994 he ran 57 times, scored 13 goals and prepared another ten goals. During the college league break he played in 1993 for the Raleigh Flyers in the United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL) . Berhalter returns as Flyers face Eagles . In: The News & Observer . Professional

After his third year at college, Berhalter signed a contract with the Dutch club FC Zwolle in 1994 . He played for Zwolle for two years, moved to Sparta Rotterdam in 1996 and finally to Cambuur Leeuwarden in 1998 . For Leeuwarden he scored two goals in two seasons and rose with them in the 1999/2000 season in the second division. Between February 2001 and the end of the 2001/02 season he played for the English club Crystal Palace .

In the summer of 2002 he moved to Energie Cottbus in the 1st Bundesliga on a free transfer . In the 2002/03 season he played 23 Bundesliga games for the Lausitzer and rose with them at the end of the season. In the 2nd Bundesliga he played 88 games for Cottbus by the end of the 2005/06 season and scored ten goals. After returning to the Bundesliga, he left the club.

For the 2006/07 season he moved to TSV 1860 Munich . In his first season he was team captain there . By 2009, Berhalter had made 73 appearances in Munich, scoring eight goals. In spring 2009 he was no longer considered under the new coach Uwe Wolf ; on April 1, 2009, his contract, which ran until June 30, 2009, was terminated.

On April 3, 2009, he moved to Los Angeles Galaxy . In his first season in Major League Soccer, he became a fixture in the Californian defense. His first goal for the team he scored on November 14, 2009 in the Western Conference final against Houston Dynamo. This secured the entry into the final of the MLS Cup 2009.

In the 2011 season he was one of the team's assistant coaches in addition to his playing activities . At the end of the 2011 season, he ended his career as a player.

National team

Berhalter played 44 full internationals for the United States. Among other things, he played two games at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. He had qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany with the USA national team , but was then not appointed to the tournament by coach Bruce Arena . After Cory Gibbs injured his knee during preparation , Berhalter was nominated for the squad two weeks before the start of the World Cup.

Coaching career

After Berhalter had gained his first experience as a coaching assistant in 2011 parallel to his last season as a player at Los Angeles Galaxy, he returned to Europe at the end of the year to take over the head coaching position at the Swedish second division club Hammarby IF . From the beginning of November 2013 he worked as head coach and sports director for the MLS club Columbus Crew in the USA. His engagement there ended after the 2018 MLS season .

On December 2, 2018, the American Football Association introduced him as the new national coach. Under his leadership, the team won, among other things, the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2021 .
