Claudio Reyna (born July 20, 1973 in Livingston , New Jersey ) is a retired American football player . He has been Sporting Director of the future MLS franchise Austin FC since November 21, 2019 .

Player career

In the club

Reyna played college football at the University of Virginia , where he was trained by the future US national coach Bruce Arena . Reyna was awarded the Hermann Trophy in 1992 and the MAC Award in 1992 and 1993 . He moved in 1995 to Germany in the Bundesliga to Bayer 04 Leverkusen , but there came in his second season, only very few inserts and in 1997 at the VfL Wolfsburg passed where he had far more success. In Wolfsburg, he became the first American team captain in a major European football club. On April 1, 1999, he moved to the Glasgow Rangers , for which he played for almost three years. In December 2001 he moved to the English Premier League for AFC Sunderland for 6.7 million euros .

In October 2002, Reyna suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his knee, which put him out of action for the remainder of the 2002/03 season. After Sunderland's relegation to the First Division , the club could not continue to finance Reynas high salary, so that the "Black Cats" decided in August 2003 to sell to Manchester City early for only 3.75 million euros. Reyna had further injury problems in his first season for Manchester but was able to play in the starting eleven at the end of the 2003/04 season. At the end of January 2007, he terminated his contract and moved to the United States for the New York Red Bulls . In July 2008, he announced his retirement from active football.

In the national team

Reyna completed his first international match in the US national team against Norway on January 15, 1994 . He was a member of the national team for the 1994 World Cup , but could not be used due to an injury. Reyna then took part in the 1998 World Cup and especially the 2002 World Cup. There he led the US national team in 2002 until the quarter-finals, in which they had to admit defeat to future finalists Germany . He was the first American to be elected to the all-star team at a World Cup. At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Captain Reyna and his US team were eliminated in the preliminary round.

Functionary career

On May 22, 2013, Reyna took over the office of Sports Director at New York City FC . In November 2019, he said goodbye to New York and then went to Austin FC . There he became the first sports director of the newly created franchise.

Private

Claudio Reyna is the son of an Argentine father and a Portuguese mother and has, in addition to the US, also the Portuguese citizenship.

In July 1997, Reyna married former US international Danielle Egan . The two have four children together. On July 19, 2012, Reyna's 13-year-old son died of complications from his cancer.

His son Giovanni , born in 2002 , also followed in his father's footsteps and last played in the academy of the MLS franchise New York City FC before moving to Borussia Dortmund in the U19.
