- May 25 : The Greek destroyer “Velos” shears out of the fleet during a NATO maneuver in the eastern Mediterranean and shortly thereafter calls at the Roman port of Fiumicino. In July 1974 the Greek military dictatorship (in power since 1967) collapsed.
