Sergei Tumansky ( Russian Сергей Константинович Туманский ., Scientific transliteration Sergei Konstantinović Tumanskij ; born May 8 . Jul / 21st May  1901 greg. In Minsk ; † 9. September 1973 in Moscow ) was a Soviet engine designer.

Life

During the October Revolution and the civil war that followed, Tumanski worked as an engine manager for military aircraft, including in the “Grom” department, which was equipped with the heavy Ilya Muromets bombers . There he also flew occasional missions as an airborne or bombardier . After completing a technical course at the military technical school in Petrograd , he served for a while in the air force before he began studying at the Zhukovsky University in Moscow. After its completion, Tumanski worked from 1931 to 1938 and then again in 1940 in the Central Institute for Aircraft Engines , which belonged to Aircraft Engine Plant 29 in Zaporozhye . There he developed the double radial engines M-87 and M-88, based on the M-85 license construction of the Gnome-Rhône 14K , to series production readiness, which were used, among other things, in the DB-3 and Il-4 bombers. In 1943 Tumanski became the second man in Alexander Mikulin's OKB ( experimental design office ) . In 1955 he was appointed chief engineer and the following year general engineer. He held this position until 1973.

Tumanski had a major influence on the development of jet engines for supersonic aircraft. He developed the R-11 F-300 for the MiG-21 and the R-15 for the Mach 3+ fast MiG-25 .

After he was awarded the State Prize in 1946, he was honored with the Order of Hero of Socialist Labor and the Lenin Prize in 1957 , especially for the development of the R-11. Tumanski had been a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union since June 26, 1964 , as well as a four-time holder of the Order of Lenin and the Order of the October Revolution , the Order of the Red Banner and various other awards.
