In 1919, at the suggestion of Nikolai Jegorowitsch Schukowski, the Moscow Aviation Technology Center was founded. From 1920 the institution was named Institute for Engineers of the Red Air Fleet . In the next five years the name changed to the Air Force Academy (1922) and the Air Force Military Academy (1925). The institution has had its current name since 1946. After the death of Zhukovsky in 1922, the academy was given his name.
