Sergei Kondratjewitsch Gorjunow
Sergei Kondratjewitsch Gorjunow ( Russian Сергей Кондратьевич Горюнов ; born September 25, jul. / 7. October 1899 greg. In Uschakowka, Government Simbirsk , Russian Empire ; † 2. October 1967 in Kiev , Soviet Union ) was a Soviet-Russian Colonel General and Hero of the Soviet Union .
Life
In May 1918, Gorjunov joined the Red Army as a volunteer and took part in the Russian Civil War as a soldier . In September 1919 he was wounded. Since March 1920 he was a member of the WKP (B) , the later CPSU. As a battalion commander he took part in the fighting in Mongolia in 1921 against the troops of Baron von Ungern-Sternberg . In 1932 Gorjunow graduated from the Military Academy for Air Force Engineers “Prof. NJ Zhukovsky ” in Moscow and then served in the air force of the Baltic Fleet . In August 1938 he took part in the Battle of Lake Chassan . In 1939 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR and then commanded the Air Force of the 7th Army in the Winter War .
With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War , he commanded the air force of the 18th Army. From May 19, 1942 he was deployed on the North Caucasus Front. Since the creation of the 5th Air Army , he was its commander throughout the war. The 5th Air Army took under his leadership u. a. Participated in the following battles: North Caucasian Operation , Battle of Kursk , Belgorod-Kharkov Operation , Battle of the Dnieper , Cherkassy Basin Battle , Operation Jassy-Kishinev , Debrecen Operation , Vienna Operation and Prague Operation .
After the war, Goryunov continued to command the 5th Air Army, from May 1946 the 17th Air Army and from April 1949 the 57th Air Army. In 1956 he retired.
Gorjunow died in 1967 five days before his 68th birthday and was buried next to his wife Alexandra Gorjunowa (1900–1964) in the Berkowezkyj cemetery in Kiev.
