The medal "40 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR" ( Russian Юбилейная медаль "40 лет Вооружённых Сил СССР" ) was an award of the Soviet Union , which was donated on December 18, 1957 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Soviet armed forces in one stage. The award was made to all military ranks in the army as well as to retired military personnel. The medal was also awarded to members of the Ministry of Public Order and Security of the USSR and Red Guards .

The 32 mm by measuring gold medal from brass displays on its obverse the left-looking head bust of Lenin , the lower half is flanked by two branches. The left branch consists of oak and the right branch of bay leaves, which cross in the middle. The year 40 can be read over the cross point . The reverse of the coin shows the other hand, within the inscription В ОЗНАМЕНОВАНИЕ сороковой годовщины (To commemorate the occasion of the fortieth anniversary), the four-line inscription: Вооруженных / сил / СССР / 1918 to 1958 to read (Fifty years armed forces of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). A Soviet star can be seen underneath. The medal was worn on the left chest of the entrant on a pentagonal gray clasp, the hem of which is red. In addition, two vertical red bars are woven in the middle. The interim clasp is of the same quality. 820,080 medals were awarded.
