Simbirsk Governorate
The Simbirsk Governorate ( Russian : Симбирская губерния / Simbirskaja gubernija) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire and the Russian SFSR , located right on the middle course of the Volga in eastern European Russia. It existed from 1796 to 1928. The capital was Simbirsk . In 1924 the name was changed to Ulyanovsk and Ulyanovsk Governorate in honor of Lenin . The government bordered on the north by the Kazan province , to the east by the Samara Governorate , on the south by the Saratov province , to the west by the Penza province and in the northwest of the province of Nizhny Novgorod .
history
The Simbirsk Governorate was formed in 1796 from the Simbirsk Lieutenancy . The Ulyanovsk Governorate existed until 1928 as part of the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union . After the dissolution, its territory was added to the new Central Volga Oblast administrative unit .
scope
The first Russian census in 1897 counted 1,527,848 inhabitants (31 / km²) on 43,491 square meters (= 49,500 km²). The population consisted of 67% Russians, 12% Mordvins, 10% Chuvashes, 9% Tatars, etc. Approx. 7% lived in cities. The capital Simbirsk had 41,684 inhabitants.
In 1926 the governorate covered 34,071 km² with 1,384,220 inhabitants (40 / km²).

- Alatyr (1925 to the Chuvash ASSR and the Ujesdi Ardatow and Ulyanovsk)

- Kurmysch (1920 parts to the Chuvash Autonomous Oblast, remainder to the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate and Ujesd Alatyr in 1922)
- Sengilei (dissolved in 1924)
- Simbirsk (1924 Ulyanovsk)
