The Tatar ASSR ( Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Federative Socialist Soviet Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union . It existed from 1920 to 1990. The steppe area is located at the mouth of the Kama and the Kuibyshev reservoir of the Volga . The capital was Kazan . The area has large deposits of oil and phosphorite . In 1920 the ASSR area, conquered by Russia in the middle of the 16th century , became part of the RSFSR. During the collapse of the Soviet Union , the area declared itself a sovereign republic on August 30, 1990 under the name of Tatarstan , which was confirmed by a referendum in 1992. In 1994, however, a new federation treaty was signed with Russia. Since then, the Republic of Tatarstan has once again become a federal subject of Russia. Tatarstan agreed with the central power new special rights, which include extended economic autonomy.

The main inner belt asteroid (2668) Tataria is named after the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
