The Kalmyk ASSR ( Russian Калмыцкая АССР ; Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union . The capital was Elista . The area lies between the Volga and the Manytn lowlands . The ASSR existed from 1935 to 1942 and from 1958 to 1991, previously as an autonomous oblast from November 4, 1920 . In 1942 Kalmykia was partially occupied by the German Wehrmacht and in December 1942 it was recaptured by the Red Army . In 1943 the area was placed under the central administration. The Kalmyk population was deported to the Asian part of the Soviet Union and the capital was renamed Stepnoi . After the rehabilitation of the Kalmyks, the city was renamed back in 1958 and the area was renamed the Autonomous Republic (ASSR). After the dissolution of the USSR, the Republic of Kalmykia retained the status of an Autonomous Republic within the Russian Federation.
