Karakalpak Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic
The Karakalpak ASSR ( Karakalpak Soviet Socialist Republic ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union . It existed from 1932 to 1991. The capital was Nukus . Around 1.4 million people live in the 165,600 square kilometers of rural steppe and desert area.
From 1919 to 1924 the north of the region belonged to the Kyrgyz ASSR , after which the region became an autonomous territory as the Karakalpak Autonomous Oblast and on March 20, 1932, it became part of the RSFSR as the Karakalpak Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ASSR . With the constitution of 1936 , the area became part of the Uzbek SSR again on December 5, 1936 . Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the region has been part of Uzbekistan as the Karakalpak Republic .
