The Mari ASSR ( Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Mari ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Federative Socialist Soviet Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union . It existed from 1936 to 1991. The capital was Yoshkar-Ola . From 1920 to 1936 the region was an autonomous territory of the Mari , then it became an ASSR. In 1991 the area declared itself a sovereign republic, but retained its federal status and has since been part of Russia under the name of Republic of Mari El . The area is rural and is inhabited by around 800,000 people. In some sources the members of the Mari people are referred to as Cheremiss and the area as the Cheremissian ASSR . Officially, however, the people were and are named as Mari and the area as ASSR of the Mari .
