Live and act

Schmadel was born in Berlin in 1942 as the son of the journalist Walter Schmadel .

Schmadel examined in particular the orbital properties of asteroids (planetoids). He himself discovered several of these small bodies of the solar system , including (8661) Ratzinger , (10114) Greifswald , (11508) Stolte and (15728) Karlmay .

He is the author of the Dictionary of Minor Planet Names, first published in 1992 . This reference work has since appeared in several editions and contains information on the discovery and naming of more than 17,000 asteroids (6th edition, 2012). Schmadel is also the namesake of an asteroid: the asteroid of the middle main belt discovered on April 27, 1977 (2234) Schmadel was named after him.

For his part, he suggested for his with frankness Börngen discovered in September 1992 asteroid with the provisional name "1992 RY" the name (21109) Sünkel ago - in honor of and in the astrometry working surveyors Hans Sünkel (TU Graz). The International Astronomical Union followed suit in 2006. The asteroid is about 500 million kilometers from Earth , like most of the asteroid's main belt .
