After a two-year research stay in 1978/79 at Ohio State University (in the US “geodesic mecca” Columbus ), where he developed geodetic applications of collocation for geoid determination , Sünkel returned to the TU Institute for Theoretical Geodesy and completed his habilitation in Graz in 1981 Department of Numerical Geodesy .

In 1983 he was appointed full professor for mathematical and numerical geodesy at Graz University of Technology. He used two honorable appointments to the University of Karlsruhe (1985) and to the Ohio State University (2001) in order to achieve better research conditions in Graz by defending himself against appointments . From 1987 to 2003 he was head of the newly organized Institute for Theoretical Geodesy at Graz University of Technology. Since 1990 he has been head of the satellite geodesy department of the Institute for Space Research (IWF) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences; from 2001 to 2004 he was also director of the IMF.
