International Union for Geodesy and Geophysics
The International Union for Geodesy and Geophysics ( IUGG ; French Union géodésique et géophysique internationale , UGGI ) was founded in 1919 on a European initiative. It is one of the largest scientific umbrella organizations in the world and is divided into eight specialist associations. Over 100 states are members of the Union or its parts, as well as around 60 globally active associations.
Structure in associations
Until about 1970 the Union was divided into a section for geodesy (about 80 member states) and one for geophysics (about 70 member states). While the geodesists retained this internal structure, but brought their technical departments into a special Fédération Internationale des Géomètres (FIG), the development of geophysics in the 1970s led to its division into six special sub-associations within the IUGG; In addition, the Association for Cryosphere Research (IACS) was founded in 2007 . The structure of the IUGG is now:
- International Association of Geodesy (IAG)
- International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA)
- International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS)
- International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS)
- International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (IAPSO)
- International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI)
- International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI)
- International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS).
Duties and general meetings
The main task of the IUGG is the promotion and coordination of research on the earth and near-earth space . It founds special commissions on long-term research topics and special study groups (SSG) on current topics. The Union also maintains a number of scientific services ( Service ), including the Earth's rotation and GPS . Large two-week congresses with 5,000 to 10,000 participants and hundreds of individual conferences take place every four years. The last eight took place:
- 1991 in Vienna (Austria)
- 1995 in Boulder (USA)
- 1999 in Birmingham (Great Britain)
- 2003 in Sapporo (Japan)
- 2007 in Perugia (Italy)
- 2011 in Melbourne (Australia)
- 2015 in Prague (Czech Republic)
- 2019 in Montreal (Canada)
- 2023 in Berlin (Germany)
Some of the associations meet in the years between the General Assemblies, e. B. those for geodesy ( International Association of Geodesy , IAG) 1997 in Rio de Janeiro , 2001 in Budapest , 2005 in Cairns , 2009 in Buenos Aires .
Important international cooperation partners are branches of the United Nations and the International Science Council (ICSU), as well as numerous regional organizations of the geosciences such as the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and EGU , meteorology and astronomy ( International Astronomical Union (IAU)), the oe IAG , the oceanographic umbrella organizations of IAH , IAPSO and IHO , or the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR).
