International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) is the international association of volcanology and geochemistry . It is one of the eight associations of the geoscientific union IUGG , whose origins lie in a learned society of volcanologists that was formed around the turn of the century .

history

The association was founded in 1919 and already had a section for volcanology . The research assignment of this department was officially constituted at the first IUGG General Assembly in Rome in 1922 . Eight years later, the fourth IUGG General Assembly in Stockholm in 1930 decided to change its name to the International Association of Volcanology (IAV). The association's statutes were adopted in Helsinki in 1960 and revised in Zurich in 1967 and in Canberra in 1979 . In order to correspond by name with the sister organization International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI), the name that is still used today was introduced in 1967.

While only states and corporations are members of the IUGG, since 1996 only private individuals have been able to apply for membership in the IAVCEI.

Structure and tasks

IAVCEI sees itself as a leading international body with regard to three main points:

  1. Volcanological research
  2. Efforts to mitigate natural volcanic disasters
  3. Research in closely related scientific disciplines such as igneous geochemistry , petrology , geochronology and with regard to volcanic mineral deposits and the physics of the generation and ascent of magmas in the earth's upper mantle and crust .

It has set itself the goal of encouraging research as well as initiating and coordinating it. This is primarily intended to support and promote international scientific collaborations. Volcanologists should be enabled and encouraged to inform appropriate authorities about the relevance of adequate observation and monitoring of active and potentially active volcanoes as well as risk assessment.

IAVCEI is headed by an executive committee elected for four years. During the 2015–2019 legislative period, it has eleven members. It is chaired by President Donald B. Dingwell and General Secretary Roberto Sulpizio . Official scientific journal of the IAVCEI since 2014 only in digital form made available Bulletin of Volcanology . Within the association, the members can join one of numerous commissions. These are groups of scientists with similar research focuses for international exchange.

The IAVCEI's general scientific assembly meets every four years. Another important series of events organized by the organization are the so-called "Cities on volcanoes", which take place every two years in these cities - in other words, places that are in the immediate vicinity of active volcanoes. In addition, IAVCEI awards four different science prizes at different intervals:
