Donald B. Dingwell
Donald Bruce Dingwell OC (* 1958 in Corner Brook , Newfoundland , Canada ) is Director of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Chair of Mineralogy and Petrology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He is the former Secretary General of the European Research Council (ERC).
Life
Dingwell received his B.Sc. in 1980 under the direction of Hugh Miller and Dave Strong. (Hons.) In Geology and Geophysics from Memorial University of Newfoundland . His PhD. in geology from the University of Alberta in 1984 under the supervision of Chris Scarfe. In 1992 he received his Dr. rer. nat. habil. in geochemistry from the University of Bayreuth . He was also awarded honorary doctorates (D.Sc.) from the University of Alberta and University College London .
Dingwell began his research career at the Carnegie Institution of Washington (now Carnegie Institution for Science ), where he was a Carnegie Fellow at the Geophysical Laboratory from 1984 to 1986. He held his first permanent position (tenure track) at the University of Toronto as Assistant Professor. In 1987 he moved to the newly founded Bavarian Institute for Experimental Geochemistry and Geophysics (Bayerisches Geo-Institut) at the University of Bayreuth , where he worked as assistant to the founding director Friedrich Seifert . Since 2000, Dingwell has held a professorship for mineralogy and petrology at the Faculty of Geosciences at Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU). He has been director of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences since it was founded in 2002. He was also visiting professor at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Stanford University and the Institut de physique du globe de Paris (Paris Sorbonne Cité).
From September 2011 to December 2013 he was the third and last Secretary General of the European Research Council (ERC), for which he initiated a global participation campaign. He also held the office of President of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior ( IAVCEI ). His research focus in the geo and environmental sciences lies in experimental volcanology , with reference to geophysical, geochemical and petrological science. He researches volcanic eruptions and their role in the earth system. He has written several hundred publications and is often cited. He is also the founder of the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in volcanism, entitled Volcanic Eruptions: a material science , which has had over 20,000 participants since its inception in 2013.
Dingwell is a member of academies in Germany ( Leopoldina and acatech ), Canada ( Royal Society of Canada ) and Europe ( Academia Europaea ). He is a fellow of the Geological Society of Canada (GAC), the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA), the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the American Society for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Gutenberg Research College of the University of Mainz and the Center of Advanced Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and honorary member of the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia.
