The Memorial University of Newfoundland , (short: Memorial University or "MUN") is a Canadian state university based in St. John's (Newfoundland) . It has other campuses in Newfoundland and Labrador . Over 18,000 students are enrolled at the university. This makes the university the largest in the Canadian Atlantic provinces .
history
The university was founded in 1925 as Memorial University College (MUC). The college was named in memory of the fallen Newfoundlanders in World War I , and this was later expanded to include those who fell in World War II . The campus was built on Parade Street in St. John's. The first president of the university was JL Paton. The university started with two-year courses and the first year with around 57 students. In the 1940s the number of students rose to over 400. In 1933 the college merged with another college and received grants from the Carnegie Corporation of New York Foundation. In 1949 Memorial University College was granted full university status by the provincial government. In 1961, 1400 students were studying at the university. In 1969 the university opened a campus in Great Britain.

Scholarships
In addition to other grants, the university awards grants for studies in the German-speaking area. The HH Jackson Travel Scholarship in German honors MUN professor Herbert Hugh Jackson, who came from Vienna and has taught German and Russian at MUN since 1951. The prize was donated when he retired in 1983.
