Essex [ ˈɛsɪks ] ( Old English Eastseaxe = "East Saxony") is a county in England , northeast of London . It belongs to the East of England administrative region . The county’s capital is Chelmsford . The cultural center of Colchester to the north is home to the University of Essex , which is internationally known for its social and economic sciences.

The name goes back to the Kingdom of Essex (East Saxony; see also Middlesex , Sussex and Wessex ).
