Thurrock is an administrative unit ( Unitary Authority ) in England . It lies on the north bank of the Thames , just east of London and borders Greater London , Essex and - on the other side of the river - Kent .
Until 1998, the borough was a district of Essex County . Since then, it has been administratively independent and only belongs to Essex on ceremonial occasions.
Thurrock included the places Grays , Stanford-le-Hope / Corringham , South Ockendon and Tilbury as well as a number of other villages.
The Mar Dyke flows through Thurrock and flows into the Thames at Purfleet . The Mucking Creek flows through Thurrock at Stanford-le-Hope and there flows into the Thames.
Thurrock maintains a city partnership with Mönchengladbach ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
London Gateway container terminal
In the eastern part of Thurrock - on the Thames near Corringham - is the new, large container terminal London Gateway , the first part of which was opened on November 6, 2013.
