Gloucestershire [ ˈglɒstəʃər ] is a county in south-west England . The county includes part of the Cotswolds , parts of the flat but fertile valley on the River Severn and the entire Forest of Dean .

The county’s administrative seat is Gloucester . Other major cities are Cheltenham , Stroud , Cirencester and Tewkesbury . Today's Gloucestershire borders on Monmouthshire in Wales and in England on Herefordshire , South Gloucestershire , Oxfordshire , Worcestershire , Borough of Swindon , Warwickshire and Wiltshire . The abbreviation “Glos.” Is common, and “Gloucs.” Or “Glouc.” Are also used frequently (but incorrectly).

The city of Bristol used to belong to Gloucestershire , but since 1373 the city has not been included in the county area. The area of South Gloucestershire is now a separate Unitary Authority , while it is ceremonial (ie feudal) still assigned to Gloucestershire.
