Chalford

Chalford is a small town in England in the so-called Cotswolds region and is located in the Frome Valley in the county of Gloucestershire . It is located about 4 km east of Stroud . At this point the valley is also called the Golden Valley .

history

The remains and several historic sites of burial mounds , suggest that the high levels of Chalford Hill , France Lynch and Bussage was an area that has been continuously inhabited for over 5000 years. Flint stones from the Stone Age were also excavated, as were the remains of a Roman villa.

The name Chalford is probably a fusion of two languages ​​and is probably derived from the Saxon words cealj or Chalk and the Norman word Ford . In this respect, these words have the same meaning. Chalford Hill is a recent name for the western side of the hill, but the original name was Chalford Lynch .

Lynch ( Old English: terrace ) from the Anglo-Saxon hline indicates a cultivated terrace landscape, an allusion to the orderly hilly landscape.

Personalities in Chalford

James Bradley (1693–1762), the noted astronomer and the third astronomer Royal lived and died in Chalford. Likewise, the 19th century sculptor John Thomas (1813–1862).

The British artist Damien Hirst (* 1965) lives temporarily in Chalford and owns an art studio there.
