West Yorkshire is a metropolitan county in England . It roughly corresponds to the core of the West Riding of traditional Yorkshire . West Yorkshire is bordered by Lancashire , Greater Manchester , Derbyshire , North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire .

The county consists of the five metropolitan boroughs Bradford , Calderdale , Kirklees , Leeds and Wakefield . It was formed in the course of local government reform in 1974; In 1986 the county administration was abolished. Since then, the Metropolitan Boroughs have been de facto Unitary Authorities , although West Yorkshire continues to exist legally and is a ceremonial county .
